This commission has the authority to recommend regulations as to size, value and type of construction of buildings proposed to be erected in the city. This commission recommends approval or denial to the Board of Aldermen. The recommendation of the zoning commission shall not be binding on the Board of Aldermen, which may approve or disapprove the zoning commission’s findings. Planning and Zoning has the responsibility to look at petitions for development and other matters involving zoning outside of the political realm and may make a recommendation to the Board of Alderman based on the merits of the issue.
This commission consists of two members from each ward and two members “at large”. The term of office is three years or until their successors are appointed and qualified. All members are appointed by the Mayor with Aldermanic approval. The zoning commission may elect from among its members, its chairman, vice-chairman, secretary and treasurer. All of the members shall serve without compensation. Vacancies are filled for the unexpired term only.
