St. Lucas United Church of Christ is hosting an educational presentation on the opioid problem in St. Louis County and the surrounding area led by Dr. Joseph Forand. The presentation will take place on Monday, January 30 at 7:00 pm at St. Lucas UCC. Topics covered will include background on opioids themselves, the science behind opioid addiction, how it impacts the community, and ways to recognize addiction in friends and family.

 The St. Lucas UCC Social Justice committee is eager to host this important conversation. “While the opioid crisis frequently makes headlines, few in our community take the time to learn about it until it shows up in their daily lives,” said Bill Brinkhorst, a committee member.

 Dr. Joseph Forand is an anesthesiologist affiliated with Mercy Hospital South. He received his medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine and has been in practice over 20 years. In 2014, he worked with St. Anthony’s Medical Center to produce the documentary film, “Anatomy of an Overdose.” The film was inspired by the rising numbers of overdoses Forand was seeing in the hospital emergency room.
